HOW TO HAVE GREAT WORKOUTS WHILE TRAVELLING

Traveling often means fewer pressures and an opportunity to treat yourself to some relaxation; the downside is that we often come back home feeling a little overweight and sluggish. It leaves us with the opposite feeling we went away on vacation chasing! But it doesn’t have to be that way.  A vacation doesn’t mean that you have to lose a daily routine of staying active and healthy. Regardless of where you are or what equipment you have access to, here are a couple of tips to stay in shape, keep your commitment, and prioritize your health! 

GYM

It is obvious that most of us don't want to spend hours in a gym sweating while on vacations, but the lower stress environment of a vacation can provide for the perfect opportunity to focus on taking care of our bodies. So, instead of working for isolated muscle groups each day as many of us would typically do, try movements that engage your full-body; resistance workouts that focus on multiple major major muscle groups as well as core stabilizing muscles all at the same time. Weighted exercises like squats, deadlifts, lunges, cleans or thrusters. These types of movements will help you work up a good sweat, engage the entire body and provide a great workout in 25-45 minutes. No need to spend half a day in the gym! They do require access to a gym facility or special equipment, but if you have one in your hotel or AirBnB - or even a cool local facility near your accommodations that offer drop-in passes - these movements are a great way to jump-start your day.

H.I.I.T. IT!

If you find yourself at a location with limited access to equipment, our first recommendation is to take advantage of a HIIT workout - High-Intensity Interval Training. These are workouts that involve shorts bursts of high-intensity movements with a brief rest period in between. HIIT workouts generally provide many of the benefits of other workouts, in a shorter period of time and without requiring equipment. It’s a great way to maximize your free time but still stay in shape. They can elevate your metabolism for up to 48 hours after your workout to keep you burning more calories even while you read on the beach! You can search HIIT workouts on Youtube, but the best variations involve body-weight movements like 100 m sprints, air squats, push-ups, sit-ups, burpees or mountain climbers. Any movement that you can do without equipment is often a good one. Try establishing a certain number of rounds that you want to complete and take a brief rest in between in round to recover enough that you can expend a high amount of energy again on the next one. You will feel amazing all day, even with a simple 15 minute, 4 round workout!

WATER IS YOUR BEST TRAVEL COMPANION
